I don't know why Tumblr thought this was a good idea.
Like, I imagine their thought process was, "either they'll eventually change their mind and give it a chance, or they'll become too frustrated at turning it off that they'll try it."
But like. People don't work that way.
If you dislike a feature and have to actively work to remove it on a regular basis, you just grow more and more resentful of the function every time. Because they're requiring you to constantly express your dislike of it, and reinforce that it's a negative experience.
It's also giving you busy work, which people especially hate from their entertainment. You just can't salvage that.
If they made it a permanent setting, eventually, a new user is going to say, "hey, you need to see this video!" And your curiosity is going to get the best of you, and you'll check it out at some point. And if it's good, you won't hide it again.
But since the site doesn't respect that decision, they'll never get that behavior. Because when something cool eventually does reach Live, users are going to resent it so much they'll dogpile on the idiot who doesn't know they're supposed to turn it off out of spite every week.
And even if it's good? The cumulative negative experience will not allow anyone to acknowledge it.
I can't overstate that whoever decided to make it a temporary toggle, is less qualified to make any decisions, than your local trash can.
